A man with an extensive criminal history has been charged after stabbing a 34-year-old man and attacking a pregnant woman outside a restaurant in Charlotte, North Carolina, with police saying he used a knife, his hands, feet and teeth during the assault.
Paul Abdul Hicks, 31, was arrested on Monday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and assault on a pregnant woman. A judge set no bond when he appeared in court on Tuesday morning, according to Queen City News.
Officers from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded at around 3.40pm on Monday to the 5100 block of Equipment Drive, outside a restaurant in northeast Charlotte, following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators said Hicks physically attacked a 26-year-old pregnant woman before attempting to kill her with a knife. He also attacked the 34-year-old man, who suffered severe lacerations and was taken to Novant-Main hospital for treatment. The pregnant woman sustained minor injuries.
The victims and the suspect were described by police as having an “outside-family” relationship. Mecklenburg County jail records show Hicks has been arrested at least 12 times for various crimes. The case is due back in court in early July.
