Anya Taylor-Joy stars as a con artist on the run from the FBI and a ruthless mob boss in Lucky, a seven-episode Apple TV+ adaptation of Marissa Stapley’s bestselling novel, produced by Reese Witherspoon and premiering on 15 July.
Apple TV+ is preparing to launch Lucky, a seven-episode crime thriller starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a brilliant con artist forced to go on the run after a multi-million dollar heist collapses. The series, adapted from Marissa Stapley’s bestselling 2021 novel of the same name, debuts on Wednesday, 15 July, with its opening two episodes, before the remaining instalments arrive weekly, running through to 19 August. As Lucky embraces her criminal past to survive, she finds herself hunted simultaneously by the FBI and a merciless crime boss.
From Reese’s Book Club to the Screen
Stapley’s novel first gained prominence as a Reese’s Book Club pick, championed by Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon, before Apple TV+ acquired the rights to adapt it. Witherspoon now serves as an executive producer on the series through her production company, Hello Sunshine. Taylor-Joy revealed on This Morning that Witherspoon had envisioned her specifically for the lead role from the outset. “It was so exciting. I got a call saying Reese wanted to send me a book and that she wanted to co-produce with me which is obviously the most incredible sentence to hear through a telephone,” she said. “And then when I read the book, I really felt like I had something to add to it which you want to feel as a producer and from that moment on, it’s been the most beautiful collaboration.”
Taylor-Joy Takes on a Dual Role Behind the Camera
Alongside starring as Lucky, Taylor-Joy also serves as an executive producer on the series through her own production company, Ladykiller. The 30-year-old actress is best known for her Golden Globe-winning turn as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, alongside other notable roles in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Witch, Peaky Blinders and The Split.
Behind the Scenes and Supporting Cast
Lucky was created by Jonathan Tropper, who also co-showruns the series alongside Cassie Pappas. The supporting cast features Annette Bening as mob boss Priscilla, Timothy Olyphant as Lucky’s father John, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as FBI agent Billie Rand, and Drew Starkey as Lucky’s husband Cary. Filming took place across Las Vegas and Los Angeles, with production wrapping in 2025. Apple has given the series a TV-MA rating, reflecting its violence, language and sexual content.
Anticipation Building Ahead of Release
Lucky arrives on the heels of Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You on Netflix, giving crime drama fans another major series to look forward to. Even before its premiere, the show has already built a devoted following among readers of Stapley’s original novel, many of whom have described the book as an “incredible” read.
