American cartoonist and filmmaker Nick Bougas, known by the pen name A. Wyatt Mann, has died at 71. Bougas was born in 1955 in Savannah, Georgia, and built a wide-ranging career as a filmmaker, illustrator, producer and cartoonist. Multiple investigations and later academic research have attributed the pseudonym “A. Wyatt Mann,” a phonetic play on “a white man,” to Bougas, although he himself reportedly never publicly confirmed the identification.
Origins of the image
Original artwork that later became known as “The Happy Merchant” was published in the early 1990s, including in material associated with Tom Metzger’s White Aryan Resistance. The image was subsequently separated from its original cartoon context and began circulating independently online, with researchers tracing its earliest known online appearance back to at least 2001.
Since then, the image has become one of the internet’s most widely recognised antisemitic memes, spreading first through online communities including 4chan before appearing in numerous modified forms across other platforms in the years since.
A wider underground career
Beyond his cartoon and illustration work, Bougas had a much broader career within underground and counterculture circles. His film credits included Death Scenes, Speak of the Devil: The Canon of Anton LaVey, and The Goddess Bunny.
He was also known for his involvement in true-crime research and collecting, corresponding with high-profile prisoners and amassing material including letters, artwork and other memorabilia connected to criminal cases. Alongside this, Bougas contributed illustrations and other work to a number of underground and counterculture publications, including Answer Me!, The Black Flame, Malefact, Exit and Brutarian.
Circumstances of his death
