Elon Musk has reignited his public feud with his estranged transgender daughter, posting on his own social media platform X that “the woke mind virus killed my son” — a statement that drew both fierce condemnation and widespread conservative praise, and prompted a characteristically sharp response from Vivian Jenna Wilson herself.
The post, published on Sunday 17 May, came in response to a quote-tweet referencing Musk’s longstanding vow to “destroy the woke mind virus.” It is among his most direct and personal formulations yet of a position he has held publicly since at least 2024 — that his daughter’s transition and their estrangement are not the result of his own conduct as a parent but of what he describes as an ideological and medical system that targeted his child.
Vivian Jenna Wilson, born Xavier Alexander Musk in 2004, legally changed her name and gender marker in 2022 at the age of 18. Now 22, she has modelled for Gucci, publicly advocated for transgender rights and described Musk in interviews as an absent and cruel father. She has rejected his account of her childhood as “entirely fake” and responded to his “woke mind virus” framing with characteristically dry wit — including merchandise bearing a quip along the lines of “I look pretty good for a dead bitch.” On Threads she previously dismissed his framing as a “cliché victim narrative,” writing: “It’s just tired, it’s overdone, it’s cliché. I’m just bored honestly.”
Musk has consistently maintained he was misled during the pandemic-era isolation of 2020 into approving puberty blockers for his child, and that progressive gender ideology — rather than genuine innate dysphoria — drove the outcome. His post attracted immediate praise from right-wing figures including Argentine President Javier Milei, while critics accused him of transphobia and of publicly dehumanising his own child.
The exchange sits within a genuinely contested medical and political debate. The UK’s Cass Review — an independent four-year examination of NHS gender services — concluded in 2024 that the evidence base for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones in young people was of very low quality, and that the treatments did not clearly reduce long-term suicide risk while carrying significant risks including infertility and bone loss. Sweden, Finland and Norway have all moved to sharply restrict such interventions for minors following similar reviews. Historically, studies showed that 60 to 90 per cent of childhood gender dysphoria cases resolved without medical intervention — though that data predates the sharp rise in adolescent presentations observed over the past decade.
Vivian, as a legal adult at the point of her transition, did not require parental consent for the steps she chose to take. She has made clear she considers her identity entirely her own and Musk’s framing entirely his problem.
The public rupture between one of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful men and his estranged daughter has become one of the more viscerally personal fronts in a culture war that shows no sign of cooling.
