Britney Spears caused a stir on Los Angeles’s 101 Freeway on Thursday after standing through the sunroof of a moving SUV at around 45mph, in the latest attention-grabbing moment since she resolved her DUI case earlier this year.
Britney Spears turned heads on one of Los Angeles’s busiest freeways on Thursday, photographed standing through the moonroof of a black Mercedes SUV as it travelled along the 101 Freeway near Studio City, having set off from Thousand Oaks. The 44-year-old singer stretched both arms across the roof of the moving vehicle and threw her head back in a pose reminiscent of one of her music videos, seemingly unbothered by the surrounding traffic as her blonde hair blew in the wind. Witnesses estimated she remained standing through the sunroof for around two minutes before the SUV exited the freeway, with the vehicle travelling at roughly 45mph throughout.
From the Freeway to a Petrol Station
After leaving the freeway, Spears pulled into a nearby petrol station, where she was seen laughing and chatting with her driver, who has recently been linked to the singer as a possible new boyfriend. The display marks the latest in a string of eyebrow-raising public moments for the star, coming just months after she resolved a high-profile DUI case.
A DUI Case Resolved Just Months Earlier
Spears pleaded to a reduced reckless driving charge, known as a “wet reckless,” in connection with her arrest on 4 March, allowing her to avoid jail time. She was instead sentenced to 12 months’ probation, fined $571, and ordered to complete 30 hours of DUI education classes. The terms of her plea agreement carry strict conditions: Spears is barred from driving with any intoxicant in her system, must submit to breath, blood, urine or saliva testing if requested by police, and cannot possess or use drugs or marijuana unless medically prescribed.
An Eventful Night at a Liquor Store and Restaurant
The freeway stunt follows a separate incident just days after her plea deal was finalised. CCTV footage obtained exclusively by the Daily Mail showed Spears stopping at Wines of the World in Sherman Oaks, where she wandered the aisles with two companions and broke into an impromptu dance while one of the men picked up a large can of alcoholic Twisted Tea. The group then crossed the street to the Blue Dog Tavern, where witnesses claimed Spears caused a commotion by “barking,” carrying a knife around the restaurant, and smoking a cigarette near the entrance. Witnesses also alleged she appeared affectionate toward her male companion, at one point feeding him food and telling him “I love you,” though it remained unclear whether the comment was romantic or made in jest.
The knife claims initially generated significant attention, but turned out to have a far less dramatic explanation: restaurant staff confirmed Spears had ordered a burger, which is routinely served with a steak knife. Her representative said the evening had been “completely blown out of proportion,” explaining that Spears had simply been having dinner with her assistant and bodyguard and had used the knife only to cut her food.
A Pattern of Headline-Making Moments
The Blue Dog Tavern outing came after Spears voluntarily cut short a three-week stay at a substance abuse rehabilitation facility, adding to questions raised by her recent legal troubles. It also follows a series of other headline-grabbing incidents earlier this year, including two separate occasions on which she was filmed swerving while driving on a highway, and an occasion where she was seen stumbling out of a bar clutching a champagne flute. Her Instagram account has similarly continued to attract attention, featuring a stream of topless photos, energetic dance videos and emotional posts, including one instance in which she claimed someone had stolen half her wardrobe and cash, prompting her to declare on social media that she intended to “rebel.”
Family Tensions Continue
Spears’s relationships with family members have remained strained in the years since her 13-year conservatorship ended. Reports last October suggested loved ones feared she was “spiraling” amid renewed family tensions, and she was notably absent from a recent family gathering celebrating her niece Maddie’s graduation. The latest freeway incident adds to a wider pattern of high-profile public appearances since the conservatorship’s conclusion, with some fans expressing concern for her wellbeing while others have defended her and urged the public against speculating about her personal life.
