An Australian woman has been hospitalised after an Uber driver allegedly threw hot coffee over her during a heated confrontation that erupted when he refused to continue with her journey and asked her and her friend to cancel the trip.
Footage of the altercation, posted on X, shows the driver, who is claimed to be Indian, repeatedly warning the two women to get out of his vehicle after they declined to cancel the booking. “Get out of my car. Can’t you understand? I am telling you one more time, otherwise I am going to spill coffee on you,” he says in the clip, as the women continue to film the exchange while arguing with him. One of the women is heard responding: “I am not cancelling the trip because I have been stung before. Why would you accept it?”
The situation escalates when the driver allegedly throws a cup of hot coffee over one of the women, prompting bystanders to gather at the scene. When asked what had happened, one of the women explained: “We get in the car and he goes, I can’t take two people. I’m like, well why the f–k would you accept the trip? And then he pulled over and made us cancel it and then starts abusing her like a f—g idiot.” The viral post claims one of the women suffered burns serious enough to require hospital treatment.
The footage has divided opinion online, with reactions split between concern for the passengers’ safety and questions over why the women remained in the vehicle once asked to leave. One commenter wrote: “Rideshare itself is a scam, he legally owns the car and is allowed to eject you from it. If you didn’t want to be scammed you shouldn’t have downloaded the scam app and agreed to be scammed. That being said, of course he should calmly call the police and wait for them.” Another said: “Why couldn’t they just get out? I don’t get it, even smirking like that. He has a family to feed and you’re not getting out his car why? Play silly games, win stupid prizes.” A further comment noted: “They acknowledge that the ride has already been cancelled but keep on arguing instead of just leaving, then it looks like they walk away but go back to the car for some reason?” Another user added: “He should have called the police. I don’t know why people are defending the entitled women who think they can just stay in someone’s personal vehicle when they are asked to leave.”
Police are reportedly investigating the incident.
