Tributes have been paid to Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams, who has died aged 25 just days after featuring at the 2026 World Cup.
South African football has been left in mourning after the death of Jayden Adams, the Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa midfielder, at the age of 25. His passing was confirmed on Saturday, coming only days after he took part in this summer’s World Cup with the national team. Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group games before being an unused substitute as the side lost 1-0 to Canada in the Round of 32. Tributes have since been paid to the player, according to the Mirror.
A World Cup Marked by Personal Loss
Adams’s participation in the tournament came against the backdrop of a family bereavement, after his grandmother died while he was away with the South Africa squad. The loss was publicly acknowledged by the South African Football Association at the time. Despite the personal difficulty, Adams remained involved with the squad throughout the group stage before South Africa’s campaign ended in the last 32 against Canada, for whom he did not feature having been named among the substitutes.
From Stellenbosch Academy Graduate to Sundowns Regular
Born in Cape Town on 5 May 2001, Adams came through the youth ranks at Stellenbosch FC, where he spent five seasons and became the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract. That progress led to a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, South Africa’s top-flight side, in January 2025, when he signed a contract running until June 2028. He quickly established himself at his new club, going on to make 27 league appearances and scoring four goals before his death.
An International Career Cut Short
At senior international level, Adams won 12 caps for South Africa and scored two goals, becoming a regular feature of the national set-up in the period leading up to the World Cup. As of Saturday, neither his family nor Mamelodi Sundowns had released further details, and the cause of his death had not been made public. The Mirror reported that tributes continued to be paid to the midfielder following the announcement of his death.
