Manchester United have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer, adding experienced cover to their goalkeeping ranks as the club continues its summer rebuild. The move comes as Altay Bayindir edges closer to leaving Old Trafford, with United having already completed a separate £50million deal for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos earlier this week.
Darlow, 35, joins United after his contract with Leeds United expired at the end of last season, signing a deal that runs until June 2028 with the option for a further year. The Wales international brings substantial experience to the club, having made more than 270 senior appearances across spells with Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Hull City and Leeds, including 74 outings in the Premier League. His arrival follows Monday’s confirmation that United had completed the £50million signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
A role as competition and cover
Darlow is expected to serve as back-up and competition for Senne Lammens, United’s first-choice goalkeeper, joining a goalkeeping group that also includes veteran Tom Heaton following his new one-year deal. United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, said the club’s decision to bring in Darlow was driven by his proven top-level experience as much as his character. “Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad,” Wilcox said. “We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group.” United have also pointed to Darlow’s experience and leadership as qualities that could help him mentor the squad’s younger players, alongside his role providing reliable goalkeeping cover.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Darlow said he was proud to have joined the club and eager to contribute to its goalkeeping standards. “I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United,” he said. “I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands. This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team mates and helping to drive the group forwards.”
Bayindir’s Old Trafford exit edges closer
Darlow’s signing has further reduced the path to first-team football for Altay Bayindir, who has served as understudy to both Lammens and previous first-choice Andre Onana. Bayindir is now expected to leave Old Trafford, with reported interest in the goalkeeper from clubs in Turkey and elsewhere in Europe. Onana, meanwhile, has already agreed to spend a second consecutive season on loan at Trabzonspor in Turkey, further reshaping United’s goalkeeping department as the club presses ahead with its wider squad overhaul before the new Premier League campaign.
