How the tool works
The customisation feature in question is hosted on coca-colastore.com and allows users to have personalised text printed on cans. Rather than relying on manual review, the tool uses automated content filters designed to screen out language that breaches the company’s customisation guidelines before an order can be completed. According to those guidelines, Coca-Cola generally prohibits content that is offensive, defamatory, discriminatory, political, religious, sexually explicit, hateful or otherwise deemed inappropriate for a consumer product.
Automated systems of this kind are commonly used across the personalised merchandise industry, including by companies producing customised clothing, mugs, greeting cards and engraved gifts, largely as a way of limiting legal and reputational risk. Fact-checkers find broader pattern
