Manchester United’s £38million deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta remains on course despite a short delay, with the club opting for a second, more thorough medical examination in the UK before completing what would be Michael Carrick’s first signing as permanent manager.
Manchester United’s move to sign Ederson from Atalanta is progressing towards completion, though the transfer has been pushed back slightly after the club decided to carry out a second, more detailed medical examination in the UK. The 26-year-old midfielder had already undergone an initial medical assessment while with Brazil at the World Cup, but United want the additional checks completed before finalising the £38million deal. Reports suggesting the move was at risk of collapsing have been dismissed, with the short delay attributed solely to the extra medical requirements rather than any issue with the agreement itself.
A Deal Long in the Making
United and Atalanta agreed terms on the transfer, worth up to £38million, at the beginning of June, with personal terms on a contract running until 2030 also already in place. The club’s recruitment department is understood to have tracked Ederson for more than a year before making their move, identifying him as one of their priority midfield targets. Atletico Madrid had previously been considered favourites to sign the Brazilian, but United were able to step in and complete an agreement with Atalanta once those talks stalled.
Ederson’s arrival was always expected to be finalised in July, with the timing shaped in part by his involvement in the World Cup, where he received a late call-up to Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad and made two substitute appearances, including a cameo in the 2-1 last-16 defeat to Norway.
Ederson Now Free to Focus on His Club Future
With Brazil’s tournament run now over, Ederson is expected to take a short break before linking up with his new Manchester United teammates ahead of pre-season. No firm timeframe has been set for his arrival in the UK, though all parties remain confident the transfer will be finalised in the coming weeks, with the agreement between the two clubs still fully in place.
Filling the Gap Left by Casemiro
Ederson was identified by Michael Carrick and United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, as a long-term replacement for Casemiro, who left Old Trafford following the expiry of his contract. His signing would mark Carrick’s first since being appointed permanent manager in May, and is seen as a significant moment in what is shaping up to be a pivotal summer for the club. At 26, United view Ederson as entering the peak years of his career, and expect him to become a central figure in Carrick’s rebuilt midfield. He is expected to be the first of at least two midfield additions this summer, with United continuing to assess further targets before the transfer window closes.
