Doorbell camera footage has captured the moment two men posing as Deliveroo riders attempted to force their way into a house on Downer Road in Benfleet, Essex, using a fake delivery as a pretext to gain entry. The footage, which has circulated widely online, shows the homeowner refusing to open the door as the pair persisted with their attempt.
According to the footage, one of the men initially claimed to have a delivery for someone named “David” before being challenged by the occupant inside the property. Pressed further, he then gave a different name, “Reece.” A second man, also dressed in delivery-style clothing, approached the front door shortly afterwards and appeared to try to force it open once the homeowner made clear he would not be letting them in.
Homeowner refuses to open the door
The occupant remained inside throughout the incident and did not open the door at any point, ultimately preventing the two men from gaining access to the property. The pair left without successfully entering the home, and no injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.
Part of a wider pattern of delivery scams
The footage has since spread widely on social media, prompting renewed warnings for residents to stay alert to criminals impersonating delivery drivers. Posing as legitimate services such as Deliveroo, Amazon or postal couriers is a tactic increasingly used by criminals attempting to talk their way into homes, whether as a precursor to burglary, a home invasion, or a distraction theft. Genuine delivery drivers will typically be able to confirm specific order details or will simply leave a package without pushing for further interaction at the door.
Police appeal for information
Police are urging anyone with information, or with CCTV or doorbell camera footage from the area around the time of the incident, to come forward as enquiries continue.
