The UK government has announced plans to run the country’s largest civil defence and national resilience exercise in decades next year, bringing together the military, emergency services, government departments and local authorities. Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones said the drill is designed to ensure Britain “will always be ready” should a major national emergency ever strike.
According to the government, the exercise will test the UK’s ability to respond to a wide range of major incidents, including hostile attacks, cyber incidents, natural disasters and other large-scale crises. Ministers have described it as the biggest exercise of its kind carried out in the country for decades, reflecting growing concern within government over an increasingly complex threat landscape.
Why the government is acting now
Officials said the scale of the exercise reflects a changing security environment, citing rising concerns over cyber threats, hostile state activity, terrorism and climate-related emergencies as key drivers behind the decision. Jones said the goal is to ensure the UK can respond rapidly and effectively if faced with a genuine national emergency, while also using the process to identify any weaknesses in the country’s existing response plans.
Part of a wider resilience strategy
The exercise forms part of the government’s broader national resilience strategy, aimed at strengthening the UK’s capacity to withstand and recover from future threats. Ministers said lessons drawn from the drill will be used to update emergency response plans, improve coordination between the various agencies involved, and reinforce national preparedness more generally.
Public awareness campaign to follow
Alongside the exercise, Jones confirmed that the government will launch a national resilience public awareness campaign later this year. The campaign is intended to help households understand how to prepare for emergencies and to strengthen public resilience more broadly, working in tandem with the wider preparedness effort being tested through next year’s exercise.
