A Croatian woman has been arrested after video footage showing her repeatedly punching and slamming a man to the ground outside a sports shop in central Zagreb went viral across social media, sparking fierce debate about self-defence, proportionate force and the online misrepresentation of events involving migrants.
The man in question was later identified as a Filipino national working in Croatia, though early viral versions of the footage widely and incorrectly identified him as Indian. According to police, the incident took place on 2 May in central Zagreb. The woman was arrested on 13 May in connection with the assault, with a criminal investigation now underway.
The approximately 50-second clip, first published by Croatian outlet Index before spreading rapidly across X and regional platforms, shows a physically imposing blonde woman delivering repeated blows to a smaller man, forcing him against a shop window before taking him to the ground and continuing to strike him as he lay on the pavement. The Filipino man did not respond with physical violence, while several bystanders were seen attempting to separate the pair before the confrontation concluded.
The woman, who has not been named publicly, unofficially accused the man of attempting to steal her purse and said she chose to confront him physically rather than call police. Witness accounts have been conflicting, however, with some suggesting the incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding rather than a deliberate theft attempt. The footage begins mid-confrontation, meaning no audio or context from the moments before the confrontation is available.
The clip spread rapidly on X, where it attracted sharply divided reactions. Many viewers praised the woman as someone defending herself against a would-be thief, with deportation demands featuring prominently in the replies. Others pushed back forcefully, noting that the woman’s evident physical fitness and combat ability meant she was clearly the dominant party throughout the footage, and questioning whether the sustained level of violence bore any relationship to the threat she faced.
The case has sparked widespread discussion online, particularly around broader debates about rising tensions in urban areas and the growing presence of foreign workers in Croatia’s labour market. It has also become a textbook example of how street footage is rapidly reframed in online culture war debates — with racial misidentification, in this case the repeated false claim that the man was Indian, spreading significantly faster than the verified facts.
Zagreb police confirmed the arrest and said the investigation was ongoing. No further details on potential charges or injuries sustained have been released.
