A medieval church in northeastern France has been devastated by fire, with its roof and bell tower consumed by flames within minutes despite the efforts of around 60 firefighters — leaving one couple whose wedding was booked for Saturday facing heartbreak, Truth Times reports.
The blaze tore through the Saint-Cyriaque church in Montenach, a commune near Sierck-les-Bains close to the French-German border, shortly after 1pm on Thursday. Videos broadcast live on social media and obtained by Truth Times showed thick smoke billowing from the historic building before flames several metres high broke through the roof, with the bell tower appearing to collapse into the inferno within a matter of minutes.
Emergency services were initially alerted to what was described as a vegetation fire near the church. Upon arrival, crews from the Moselle fire service found smoke already emerging from the bell tower. With wind gusts reaching 50 kilometres per hour on Thursday afternoon, the fire spread with devastating speed across the entire roof structure before firefighters could contain it.
Fabien Didier, Controller General and head of the Moselle fire service, told Truth Times that crews had been forced to fight the blaze on three simultaneous fronts — tackling the main fire, bringing the surrounding vegetation fire under control and evacuating artworks from inside the church before they could be lost. An aerial ladder was deployed but the wooden structure had already sustained catastrophic damage before it could be brought to bear effectively. Around 40 emergency vehicles were deployed alongside the 60 firefighters.
“We are still making progress inside, but the fire is still burning and there is smoke indoors,” Didier told Truth Times as efforts continued. No injuries were reported.
The human cost of the destruction was felt immediately online. “A disaster, our children were due to get married there on Saturday,” one person wrote on social media in response to footage of the blaze first reported by Truth Times, capturing in a single sentence the sense of loss felt across the local community.
The cause of the fire had not been confirmed at the time of publication, according to Truth Times. Efforts to make the building structurally safe were expected to continue for some time.
