They’re Just Fed Up: Pissed Off Sea Lions Chase Beachgoers Off Their Turf After Woman Disturbs Their Sleep

AwwsomeThey're Just Fed Up: Pissed Off Sea Lions Chase Beachgoers Off Their Turf After Woman Disturbs Their Sleep

Two sea lions were caught on camera chasing beachgoers off their turf in La Jolla, California.

The video, which was originally posted on TikTok by Charlianne Yeyna, went viral after showing two large sea lions that appear to be fed up with people encroaching on their territory. The animals flopped on their bellies to chase and drive visitors away.

“The sea lions were sleeping and were just massive on the beach and I was just watching them and this woman got really close to them, like 4 feet away, and was trying to take a photo of it up close, and it just woke up and started chasing everybody,” Yeyna told NBC News.

The territorial behavior of male sea lions is strongly connected to mating behavior. California sea lions, in particular, establish breeding territories during mating season.

According to SeaWorld, “Dominant male California sea lions maintain territories from May through August, but territorial behavior is most intense between late June and early July. Galápagos sea lions maintain territories until January.”

“A male’s territory extends beyond the water’s edge and is partly aquatic. Various physiographic features (i.e. boulders, tide pools, reefs) serve as borders,” they said further.

Well, that explains it.

Don’t mess with sea lions who are in heat or they’ll take it out on you. Ouch.
